New Coal Power Plant Bill Emerges
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - A new proposal for allowing two coal-fired
power plants in southwest Kansas has emerged from a House committee. The Energy and Utilities Committee's decision to endorse a new bill comes only three days after Gov. Kathleen Sebelius vetoed another bill. The new bill contains the same provisions Sebelius opposed, including the stripping of some of the secretary of health and environment's power. But the new bill would impose limits on the plants' carbon dioxide emissions. They would be the first CO2 limits in state law. Sunflower Electric Power Corp. wants to build the two plants outside Holcomb, in Finney County. The $3.6 billion dollar project has bipartisan legislative supportive.
