K-State Pays Tribute to Fallen U.S. SoldiersJulia Myers-Bartley
With the milestone of 4,000 U.S. soldiers now dead in Iraq, K-State University is paying tribute this week in a very special way.
The colors of yellow and red flags line the University's Quad Center, yellow for Iraq, red for Afghanistan – all representing 4, 500 fallen U.S. soldiers. K-State Freshmen, DJ Radford said, “it kinda makes me sad to see these all this has happened; but then again, I believe in the cause over there and I believe that we should have gone; we have the right to try and help out other people in other countries.” Another K-State Freshmen, Breana Nelson said, I think it was really nice of them actually to remind all of us while we're here just going about our classes and worrying about very fictitious things, it kinda puts you back to reality that there's more important things going on in the world that we need to keep remembering ." For the 2nd year in a row, student organizers came up with this Memorial as way to remind fellow classmates of the soldiers who have paid the ultimate price..with their lives... K-State’s Alliance for Peace & Justice President, Jeff Stilley said the overall message with the memorial itself is to make sure that U.S. citizens and our community are remembering that we are still in Iraq and Afghanistan and that people are still losing their lives. With an emphasis on the message of non-violence, the group decided to play an audio recording of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s speech “On Why I Oppose the War in Vietnam.” Stilley said the group chose the speech “based on the content about peace and justice and thinking of people outside of our own country as or our own sisters and brothers.” With the guidance of this project, Advisors also stress the importance of the group's message. K-State Associate Professor Cia Verschelden who teaches a course on Non-Violence at the University said, “ was very excited for them and proud of them -- this student group is a very unique group of students who care about peace and justice and are willing to work and make public statements about it.” The flag memorial will be open til Saturday, March 29th on K-State's campus. |
