New Program Targets Property Theft in Topeka

Kelli Stegeman

Safe Streets Coalition announced Wednesday a new program to deter property theft in Topeka.

Currently, property crime is the number one crime in the Capital City.

The new program, Record it! Report it! & Recover It!, is aiming to bring the thefts down but also help to return stolen property to the right owner.

Safe Streets Coalition is partnering with Topeka Police, Shawnee County Sheriff’s, Crime Stoppers and Topeka area pawn shops for the program.

They announced the details Wednesday at a press conference and are urging people to take inventory of valuable items by writing down the serial number and then mark or photograph the item.

It will help the police know who to give the items to in their property room and will also help pawn shops know if incoming items are stolen.

“We get ID from the people that come in and if we can ID these people that are dealing with stolen property, if we can get that information to law enforcement, we can get these people off the streets, out of town, even somewhere else,” Said Capitol City Pawn & Jewelry COO David Crume.

Here’s what to do:
Get a UV pen and write down your driver’s license number on your valuable property.

The writing is invisible but once you pass it over a UV light.... You can see it.

The Topeka Police Department says to make sure you just put your driver’s license number, it is safe to do that, but police stress not to put your social security number on the property.

You can find these UV pens at the Police Department, neighborhood associations and most local pawn shops.

Once you are finished marking, you return the pen where you got it so others can use it.
