Third Veto For Coal Bill
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - Gov. Kathleen Sebelius has for the third
time vetoed a bill allowing two coal-fired power plants in southwest Kansas. She also has vetoed a "trailer" measure. Supporters tied the two coal plants to economic development projects in other parts of the state. But that failed to prevent her from vetoing the measure, just as she rejected two bills before it. Sebelius said legislative leaders acted "recklessly." Sunflower Electric Power Corp. wants to build the two plants in Finney County. But Sebelius' administration has blocked them since October over their potential greenhouse gas emissions. Supporters need two-thirds majorities in both houses to override a veto, but they have always been short in the House. |
