Memorial Day Travel Expected to be Down

Kelli Stegeman

Many of you may be putting together final touches on your Memorial Day travel plans.

A recent survey by AAA shows the expected number of travelers will be down.

But there is some good news; the survey shows Kansas is in the top five cheapest states for lodging and food.

AAA says the decline in travelers is not as bad as expected.

“Our projections are that about 1% fewer people will be traveling than last year this time which is better than what we thought would be the case, certainly with all the economic difficulties and higher gas prices, you would think that more people might not be traveling,” said the Executive Vice President of AAA Kansas Region, Jim Hanni.

It's the first year since 1998 there has been a drop in number of Memorial Day weekend travelers.

Now people are more likely to just go to local attractions, the lake, the movies, or just staying put at home.

“Our plans are just going to be hanging out around home doing things,” said Kathy Hurla. “It’s gas, the price of gas. We've decided we're not going to go on vacation this year.”

Larry Kohlmeier and his family are going camping at Lake Milford; about 50 miles from where they live, but did gas prices play a part in the planning of their trip?

“Not really,” said Kohlmeier. “Because we've been going there year after year and we usually just go out on the holidays when we go camping that's pretty much it for the year because gas is expensive.”

It’s not only costing you more to drive a car but fly in an airplane as well.

The AAA study also shows discounted air fares are 8% higher than last year and that doesn't even include the fuel surcharges airlines are tacking on.
