Storm Damage Around Topeka

Kelli Stegeman

Emergency responders were out in full-force across the entire city of Topeka and other parts of our viewing area Monday morning handling calls related to the powerful storms.

Some of the damage seen was rushing water, stranded cars and flooded homes.

All it took was a short amount of time for rain and wind to wreak havoc on the city.

“Our house flooded in the torrential rainfall for the third time,” said Kim Henry. “The city has been asked to fix draining for the last 10 years and I'm on a list for it to be fixed and of course I don't have flood insurance and so the drain backs up and goes into my house.”

Henry says all it took was a few minutes to accumulate an estimated 14 inches of water in her garage.

“It always comes up really sudden and then it goes away,” said Henry. “This time it’s going down a little slower than it has in the past.”

Across town near 19th and Central Park, water rushed in knee high and debris clogged the drains.

“They went to check the basements because normally the basements here get drowned,” said Maria Alvarez who lives nearby. “They had a little bit. My brother went to get the dogs out because they were drowning too.”

A car stalled right in the intersection.

“They took it out and they opened the doors and all this water started to come out and in the back too, it was kind of weird for us to see a car with water,” said Alvarez.

She is thankful it didn't get as bad as it has been in the past.

“It could have got way worse and we could have had to be cleaning like last year.” Alvarez said.

Across the rest of town, with all the flooding, stalled cars and downed limbs, emergency responders stayed very busy.
