Red Cross Offers Heat Relief For Those In Need

The American Red Cross is aiming to help people beat the heat and today was a great day to take advantage of its "Operation Heat Relief” program.

Westar Energy donated one hundred fifty fans this morning for the program.

The fans are a way for those who are elderly, disabled, or low income to escape from the summer heat.

Westar has donated fans for over five years and this year the energy company is donating fifty more than normal.

Dana Wethington with the Red Cross has tips on other ways to stay cool. She says, “Wear light clothing, stay out of the sun. If you have to do work outside make it during times of the day that the heat isn't terrible. She adds, “Cool yourself off with wet cloths and stay in the shade obviously if you're outside.”

If you are in need of some heat relief, qualify for the program, and would like to pick up a free fan, you can apply at the Red Cross in Topeka at 1221 SW 17th Street during weekdays from 10 am to 3 pm. Applicants must provide photo identification for all household members aged five years and older, and the fans are on a first come first serve basis.
