Body of KU Law Student Found in Lawrence Home

Hannah Wooldridge

Police began searching for 25 year old KU law student, Jana Mackey, after a friend reported her missing around 4:30 yesterday afternoon.

A series of tips led Lawrence Police to Mackey's vehicle found in the parking lot of Lawrence memorial hospital around 6:30 yesterday evening.

Mackey's body was found later yesterday night around 11:30, right down the street from the hospital, in a yellow house, belonging to 46 year old Adolfo Garcia Nunez.

Crime scene investigators were still on the scene around ten o clock this morning.

The cause of death has not been released but Mackey's body was removed from the home shortly before eleven.

One neighbor says he can't believe this happened in Garcia-Nunez's house right across the street.

“He focused totally on his house and the few people that came by, which were probably family, and whatever happened over there, I don't think he had anything to do with it,” said Greg Likes, neighbor.

The Dean of the Law School said Jana was a smart, engaging woman with a warm personality. The dean said Mackey wanted to be an advocate for the rights of rape victims and domestic abuse survivors.

Mackey was originally from Hays, KS.

She attended KU, received her Undergraduate Degree in Women's Studies in 2007, and was taking summer school classes as a second year law student.

The university is offering counseling to law school students, faculty and staff at Green Hall on campus.

Police have located the white Ford F 150 pick up truck Garcia Nunez was beleived to be driving in another state.
