TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - A couple of years ago, 84-year-old Eldon Ray
found himself in trouble with a state regulatory board that fined
him $500 after he oversaw construction of a rural church. He had
hope the state this year would pay his legal fees after a
legislative committee said it should.
As it turns out, he won't get a penny because the House didn't
approve the money. Ray said he wants the money so he can pay his
attorney.
Rep. Rocky Fund, whose district includes Ray's hometown of
Mayetta, said he offered four amendments to pay the money and the
House rejected all of them. But he vowed to try again next year.
