Friends and family of Corey Brown plan to share memories at his visitation tonight as the details of his death remain unclear. Douglas County Sheriffs confirm Brown's death is being investigated as a homicide.
They say preliminary clues show a firearm may have been involved, but they will not say if Brown was shot. A passerby found
Brown's body on Thursday in Douglas County, just east of the Shawnee County line.
Brown was a business partner in the Hudson Crossing Development in Topeka, and had been missing since 3 p.m. last Tuesday. We asked Topeka Police Chief Ron Miller if recent crime in Hudson's Crossing was related to Brown's death. He says, "I don't believe that these are random acts. I believe there is some intent involved in some of these things. I don't think there's any need for this community to be overly concerned."
The same day Brown went missing, police found his business partner Monroe Lockhart's vehicle on fire and investigators say it was intentionally set.
This all comes one day before local community members held a rally for crime prevention in the parking lot of Mo's Express. The rally brought awareness to recent crimes in Hudson's Crossing, including the shooting death of a Hudson Liquor Store employee on Christmas Eve, and the shootings of two Mo's Express clerks in November.
Douglas County Sheriffs say they continue to work actively with the Topeka Police Department on their investigation of Brown's death. Attempts to reach Monroe Lockhart went unanswered.
Brown's visitation is Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Fellowship Bible Church.
