Free Dental Care A Dire Need

Kia Carter

Hundreds in need of dental care got just that today at the Kansas Expocentre. The Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation put on its fifth annual free dental clinic for adults and children.

A drill is a sound no one likes to hear, but people from around Kansas and neighboring states were lined up through the night, to hear the sound of a drill.

" I was one of the last ones to get in I was very lucky, very lucky," says Shelli VanWagoner, Hoyt.

It's the Kansas Mission of Mercy free dental clinic and Friday along it will see almost 1,200 adults and children for free services from teeth cleaning, to cavity filling and tooth extracting.

Shelli VanWagoner and her line friend Sara Cathey just made it in at 7 a.m.

"I just am very thankful so many people are willing to give their time to do this, because they don't have to and we’re at their mercy and grateful they've given us this opportunity," says Sara Cathey, Topeka.

An opportunity Sara hasn't had in 20 years. In the crowd waiting to be treated she's not alone. Shelli hasn't been able to have a dentist clean her teeth in almost 15 years.

"I have insurance, but I need dentures and it’s too expensive I don't have enough money so I’m trying to help out in any way I can," says VanWagoner.

Dentists say that besides fear there are a few big obstacles keeping people out of their chairs. One is that Medicaid doesn't cover dental expenses, and another reason these free dental clinics always see more adults, is because many parents think of their kids first.

"When you have a limited amount of resources most of us are going to make sure our kids are taken care of first and we'll put our needs on the back burner and it may take 10 or 15 years," says Dr. Kevin Cassidy, Local Chairperson.

This event is spreading nationwide. At least three other states have free dental clinics and an Arkansas representative came to today's event because that state will have its first free dental clinic in may.

Saturday is the last day for the free dental services. Doors to the Expocentre open at 5 a.m. Another 1,200 will be allowed in and it's open to anyone but it's first come, first serve.
