Deputy suspended for cutting line

FORT MEYERS, Florida, May 7, 2008 (NBC) -- A Florida sheriff's deputy has been suspended for abusing his powers during a Black Friday sale last year.

Circuit City is one of the hot spots for after Thanksgiving Day shopping.

With lines often circling buildings, cutting isn't good.

An internal investigation revealed that Collier Count Sheriff's deputy Sgt. Robert Tompkins was accused of doing just that.

The report says a customer in the Circuit City line called the Sheriff's office to complain about line jumpers.

While the customer was waiting on a deputy to show up, Sergeant Robert Tompkins arrived on scene in full uniform, but not to respond to the call.

The report shows he was there to get his own Black Friday deals.

Tompkins admitted he saw about a thousand people waiting in line to get in and stood near the door, bypassing the huge line.

Tompkins said had almost worked a full shift on Thanksgiving and was tired and wanted to get in and out and didn't think anything about it.

The customer who complained initially about line jumpers wasn't letting it go.

He complained to the sheriff's office accusing the deputy of using his position to cut in the front of the line.

Tompkins said he wasn't trying to use his position to do that.

Still, the sheriff's office says the incident shows Tompkins wasn't acting within the rules and regulations of the office.

Tompkins will be given:

2 day suspension without pay
12 months probation
A letter of reprimand
A final warning

Tompkins was previously given six months probation for shoving an inmate with a physical handicap.

No one from the Sheriff's office would comment on the matter.
