Six and one-year-old left home alone

HOUSTON, Texas, May 7, 2008 (NBC) -- A Texas mother was arrested after she allegedly left two of her children alone in an apartment Tuesday.

Authorities say Clara Villanueva, 34, was arrested after a disturbing call came in to 911.

"The 6-year-old called 911 and said something to the effect of her mother didn't have time for them," said Harris County Constable Captain Mark Herman.

Deputy Constables said they rushed to the apartment and found the 6-year-old girl and her 1-year-old sister inside without supervision.

"It's really not good judgment to leave a 6-year-old alone," said Herman. "Much less with a 1-year-old."

"I think it's very bad," said neighbor Laura Valdez, who has two children of her own.

"They're small. They don't know what's going on. They could easily turn on the stove or swallow bleach or get into whatever," Valdez said.

Villanueva's 15-year-old daughter, who was not home when her sisters was found and said both children are fine.

She said Villanueva is a good mom.

"She'll do anything for us," the teen said. "What happened today, she made a mistake and somebody panicked. But she never did anything to hurt us, so everything's good," the teen said.

Villanueva was charged with two counts of child abandonment.

Child Protective Services said its investigating the case and will ultimately decide who will get custody of the girls.
