NBC Military Analyst Says US Should Do More for Homeland Security

The capital city got a visit Tuesday from NBC military analyst General Barry McCaffrey. The retired general spoke at the state's homeland security meeting.

General McCaffrey wanted to emphasize how far the country has come over the years, when it comes to homeland security, but he also said it needs to go further. McCaffrey started off his talk at the homeland security meeting by congratulating Kansas and the Governor for the news announced today that Kansas ranks number two among the states when it comes to being prepared for a disaster. He then went on to say more can be done.

He says he's thankful the National Guard has helped the US fight the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, but says units are coming home without their equipment, as it breaks down or gets damaged overseas. That equipment he says would help in homeland disaster's like anything from tornados to terrorism. He also says protecting Americans lies in the hands of an understaffed force.

"The borders are not adequately defended. They currently have the better part of 11,000 border police, when we probably need 45,000. And the Coast Guard is under-resourced, so we've done a superb job fighting foreign wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, we have not adequately resourced the Homeland Security," says Gen. McCaffrey.

He added that the 40 billion dollars the country is spending on homeland security simply isn't enough, especially when compared to the 400 billion that has been spent in Iraq, which by the way, he believes the country will be significantly pulling out of within the next two to three years.

The report that ranks Kansas as the second best prepared state for a pandemic or disaster, ranks Oklahoma as the most prepared state.
