TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) - Two people are dead following a domestic incident in central Topeka late Monday morning.
Just before 11:00 a.m.Topeka Police began asking the public to avoid the 1100 block of High Ave. after shots were reportedly fired in the area.
Police said officers were responding to a domestic incident in the area at 10:39 a.m. when they observed a subject with a gun and heard multiple shots fired.
Officers and SWAT attempted to make contact inside the house. A response team used a remote robot to enter the house and observed two people down who were later pronounced deceased by medical personal. Their identifications have not been released at this time.
Just after 11:30 a.m. TPD reported officers were able to safely remove one person involved from the front porch but it was unknown how many person(s) were still inside the home.
Topeka Public Schools said Randolph Elementary School was put in a "secure campus" due to the incident. It has since been lifted an an increased police presence will be at the school until the situation is resolved.
The Shawnee County Sheriff's Office and the Kansas Highway Patrol assisted TPD at the scene.
