Topeka native to appear on live show of The Voice

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) - The hit show The Voice, seen on KSNT, starts its live shows Monday night.

Topeka has a hometown star that's going to be taking the stage.

Kyla Jade is a Shawnee Heights High School alum.

KSNT News Report Molly Patt talked with Kyla all the way from Los Angeles and told us how her home roots have got her to where she is today.

Kyla doesn't have plans to come home soon, but for a good reason.

"It's completely in America's hands, so I have complete anxiety," she said.

Kyla will be glammed up, taking the big stage Monday night for the live shows of The Voice, but made her way to the top, starting right here in northeast Kansas.

She got her love of music from church and her mom.

"I'm a church baby. Our house was filled with music, my mom woke us up to music, we washed the dishes to music," Kyla said. "There were songs for going to school, everything, everything in my life. Most people learn the ABCs, everything in my life has a song, being a pedestrian, we have a song for that."

But her mom isn't taking the credit that Kyla is giving her.

"She has been a singer in her heart for all her life," said Olivia Howard. "She has developed her craft and has worked so hard to get where she is."

But now it's up to America to get this Team Blake member and hometown girl to the winners circle.

Even though she's in LA right now and living in Nashville, she will always have Topeka in her back pocket.

"To anyone who has a desire to do anything, sometimes you have to leave home," Kyla said. "But that doesn't mean you don't forget your roots, doesn't mean you don't take your family with you, doesn't mean you don't find a way to get back."

The Voice is live at 8 p.m. CST Monday night right on KSNT.
