Emporia Community Two Months After Tyson Lay-offs.

It’s been two months since 1500 people were laid-off at Tyson Foods in Emporia.

The community is still pitching in to help.

Wednesday, the first 1500 workers laid-off received their last full paycheck from the company.

The next two to three months could see a change in Emporia’s economy.

People in the community are doing everything they can to help out.

“I got here on a Sunday morning and here's this boat in the church sanctuary and we decided to fill this boat up, and we did,” said Pastor Rob Clausen of First Baptist Church in Emporia.

With diapers.

After calling the Salvation Army, the church realized diapers were needed.

They wanted to donate a boatload of diapers, almost 4,000 to be exact.

“Doubled, Tripled my expectations,” said parishioner Barbara Weaver.

“Many people working at Tyson have small ones and diapers are in tremendous need,” parishioner Theresa Hinchy said.

Others across the community are pitching in as well.

Currently the city is planning for a “One Stop Shop” event where displaced workers can come and meet with SRS, The Salvation Army, the Department of Labor and others all at once.

“They can come in and at least get entered into the system, do their intake forms and start to find out what services would be available to them from the non-profit and social services agencies,” Executive Director of the United Way of the Flint Hills Duane Dreiling said.

“It's a very confusing system and when you're not familiar with the language it makes it more difficult,” said Emporia City Manager Matt Zimmerman.

Timing is everything now that the last full paychecks have come.

“Now we need to be prepared for the next sort of step down the cliff unfortunately,” Zimmerman said. “That's when there's going to be a lot less income coming into the community. But I think we've got the team and the resources in place to help out as much as we can.”

The “One Stop Shop” is planned for April 2.

Every year Tyson makes a contribution to United Way of $52,000.

Tyson announced they will still do that this year.

The United Way will take 20,000 of that and use it to help the displaced Tyson workers.
