A federal jury in Oregon has ordered Topeka-based Collective Brands to pay 305 million dollars to sporting goods maker Adidas over trademark infringement.

Adidas sued the company in 2001, claiming it sold shoes with three stripes, similar to Adidas' own three-stripe logo. Collective Brands officials call the verdict "excessive and unjustified" and say they'll ask the court to toss out the award.

Collective Brands changed its name from Payless ShoeSource last year. The company operates the Payless and Stride Rite shoe store
chains, as well as selling shoes wholesale.
