Local NewsMay 2007 Floods Revisited
Driving down Washburn Rd now is a breeze. Rewind one year ago, May 7th, impossible. Nearly 48 hours of constant rain left roads completely flooded, and residents temporarily homeless. "It got fairly deep here I know the neighbors behind us was actually a half foot in their home." Rescued by boat, Miriah Frost says she's thankful everyone got out safely that night. "Our whole block is meeting tonight at Henry T's tonight to celebrate the year flood those of us we call it those of us who didn't float away night." CY and Carmen Elting recall returning from vacation to see the damage to their house. "It was just a soggy mess when we got here. It was incredible." A mess to be cleaned up with no initial help from the city. "The first 48 hours were really frustrating because you felt you were absolutely left without any help or nothing." Shawnee County Emergency Manager Dave Sterbenz says a lot was learned from the event.
"There has been a tremendous amount of incident management training and incident command practicing." Which in turn will keep them on their toes when the time comes for action. "We're going to stay on top of this we not going to react to anything we're going to be proactive." Which is a motto all Kansans should follow when it comes to mother nature. |
