Construction Delay Hurts Local BusinessesLaine Baker
Business owners said Monday that a construction project is driving their businesses into the ground, and that the city isn't moving fast enough to finish it.
The closing of 21st and Urish has closed off business for those at Urish Center. "It's really bad," said Create Hair Co-Owner Laura Scott. "I know some of the businesses are really struggling." Owners of businesses have said they understand why the construction needs to be done...what they don't understand is why so few people have been out at the site actually doing it. "What we've had in this situation is utilities got in," said City Spokesperson David Bevens. "We expected them to be in and out in four weeks, and it has ended up being nine weeks." After the Manhattan tornado, utility crews were taken off the construction project to help people there. The city said they are hoping to make the area more accessible this week. Business owners said that's little consolation, and that communication throughout the process has been lacking. Now they don't want to talk, they just want action. "Work," Scott said. "I would like to see work." Until the construction is over, Create Hair is offering drawings and a referral program to bring in the customers. They said they want to remind people that the roads may be closed, but they are open for business. The city said they still hope to have all of the construction out at 21st & Urish complete by November. |
