Topeka's Fiesta Mexicana is Celebrating 75 yearsBy: Graham Winch
Topeka's Fiesta Mexicana is celebrating 75 years of tradition. 27 News visited today with a man who was just 7-years old when he attended the first fiesta in 19-33.
Louis Torrez remembers almost every fiesta. He missed 3 of them when he served overseas in world war two. Torrez says that only one thing has changed about the fiesta over the years.... It's gotten bigger. He also says he has many fond memories of the fiesta from his childhood. Torrez said, "We as children would get up really early in the morning, and go up there and clean up, but there was something behind that. We wanted to see if we could find any money. A nickel or a quarter or something like that, and at that time we could go to a movie with 5 cents." This year's fiesta kicks off this Tuesday. The money raised by the fiesta helps support the school of the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe. |
