Students Learn New Math TechnologyKelli Stegeman
In the halls of Seaman Middle School, new technology is being introduced for graphing calculators.
It’s designed to help out teachers and students in math. “I'm plugged into computer here through an access point and then these hubs hook into the calculator and when the kids are keying in on it, the calculator helps send it back in through that access point,” said math teacher Marlene Taylor. It’s called Navigator technology by Texas Instruments and Taylor is one of nine teachers across the country chosen to receive special training on it. “I'm enjoying being able to see the kids screens right then because they cant get behind me anymore and they can't just sit there and be anonymous, which some like to do,” Taylor said. The wireless technology sends what each child is doing to her computer. She no longer has to walk from student to student, saving her time and that's just one perk. “I learned a lot about what they didn't understand which I was assuming they did know,” she said. Taylor can also send things, like tests and numbers, from her computer to the students' calculators. The kids give it thumbs up. “I think the best part is that Mrs. Taylor is able to see it and so we know if we're messing up she'll know so she can help us,” said student Hailey Tucker. “It makes math more fun because I don't really like math,” said student Mitchel Carver. “It saves time and you don't have to write everything down.” “I think its going to make math a lot more interesting,” Taylor said. “I told the kids that part of my goal is that they don't have as much homework because I can check what they are doing in class and I don't have to send as much stuff home with them.” Studies have shown there is a low percentage of students in the US who have the math pre-requisites for a global, high-tech economy. The hope is the new technology will help increase interest and better prepare students. Taylor will now train more than 200 other teachers across the state and region on what she has learned. For the past three weeks... There have been some difficult times in the classroom while learning the new equipment but with a little practice Taylor has taught the kids a lot, and in turn they've taught her some technology she didn't know, how to text message. |
