Group Offers To Modify Proposed Emporia Smoking Ban

A group pushing for a smoking ban in Emporia is offering to modify its proposal in the face of criticism.

The proposal from Clean Air Emporia would ban smoking in businesses and other enclosed spaces, and within 20 feet of their entrances. But the group has offered to drop a part of the proposal that would revoke the city licenses of businesses caught violating the ordinance three or more times.

Clean Air Emporia spokesman Steve Sauder says it's not the group's intent to focus on businesses that need a license, such as a liquor license, to operate. The City Commission had a hearing on the proposal Monday, and more than 50 people spoke. Many, including bar and tavern owners, opposed the idea.
