Senior Citizens Concerns of Financial WoesKelli Stegeman“My personal concern is that my retirement money is going to decrease and that is my living now,” said senior Dorothy Zook. “I worked hard; I was a nurse for 40 years.” Seniors from around Kansas weighed in on concerns regarding the recent mess on Wall Street. “My concern is for the people who thought they were retired and they are going to have to go back to work,” said senior Rosalie Seemann. “I'm really concerned, maybe even me.” It’s not only themselves they are scared for, but the younger generations as well. “We are senior citizens, but the younger people who have money in their homes, who knows what is going to happen to them,” senior Helena Coles said. “We will survive,” said senior Bob Rezac. “I kind of wonder what will happen to our kids and grandkids, that is more of a concern for me.” So what do they think about the possible $700 billion bailout by the government? “If we bail them out, the money should not go to the CEOs,” Zook said. “We should remember the ones that have gotten loans; you know they took a lot of the basic laws out of getting a loan, now that ran us into problems. Now we need to go back to some basic laws.” “They've got to do something,” Seemann said. “I don't know whether the bailout is the answer but they have to do something.” “I'd like to see them go ahead and pass the bill because it’s bad for the United States and the economy,” said Cole. But Helena Cole isn't taking any chances, she's already taken her money out of her retirement fund and says she'd rather be safe than sorry. We spoke with financial advisor Kelly Donaldson with Edward Jones and he had some advice for those thinking about taking action with their finances. Donaldson says number one, don't react out of fear. Number two, before making any rash decisions consult a professional. |
