Changes Await Highway 24Amy Wolf
Pottawatomie County held two "open houses" tonight to try and find out how residents use Highway 24, and how they would like to see it improve.
Highway 24 through Pottawatomie County is heavily traveled - and it's only going to get busier, so the county try to get ahead of the curve. "The feedback we've gotten from the community is that U.S. Highway 24 is an important corridor to the community, it's seen as an asset, an economic generator," said Andrea Bopp, who works with a consulting group for the project. The group has studied how many people travel the road each day, and how land is zoned along the corridor. Those factors, plus the growth in businesses along the road, may lead to some changes. "I think trying to create that balance between maintaining its intent and accommodating the growth I think is the primary objective through this process," said Merl Page, Wamego City Manager. The group sent out about 3,700 surveys. They said the response was about 10 percent, and that lowering and enforcing the speed limit were two top concerns among respondents. Other top priorities include adding acceleration lanes and turn lanes, as well as adding traffic signals at Flush and Columbian Roads. Representatives said the hope is to make growth tolerable - not a burden. "This will help development occur in a less reactive mode. People can know what to expect, property owners can know what to expect, and so can developers," Page said. The group said no action is planned as of yet, and they still want feedback from the community. |
