501 Wants "Green" ExpansionHannah Wooldridge
USD 501 dreams of going green.
“We envision this becoming an education centered campus focusing on the use of renewable energy,” said Mike Wilson. 501 wants to purchase nearly three hundred and sixty thousand square feet of land and building space near Hummer Sports Park The district hopes of create a learning environment for students who are interested in a career in "green" construction and renovation. About ten of the thirty buildings on the property date back to the late eighteen hundreds, and might not fit into 501's new plans. When district officials toured the site they weren't even allowed inside the Center Building, and State Engineers say this community icon is too rundown to be renovated, and it might have to be torn down. “The state of Kansas is not allowing anybody to go through the center building because of the structure and potential hazards,” said Mike Wilson, Associate Superintendent. Historical Preservationists say it would be a shame to see the building, and it's architecture from the late eighteen hundreds, go, but the 501 can't wait for their modern vision to become a reality. “We envision space to provide child care for our employees, additional other uses include a make-it-take center for our district teachers, a preschool, a dormitory for student teachers, or new teachers to the district, even consolidating district offices to one site,” said Wilson. Topeka Public Schools says the land will provide numerous opportunities for the district to grow and also hopes to lead other public schools to adopt similar, eco-friendly, expansion plans. 501 should know if it can purchase the land in the next few weeks. The district hopes to partner with Washburn University and Kaw Area Technical school to complete their plans for "green" construction, as well as community involvement. |
