The Last SCCA Runoffs Begin at Heartland ParkKelli Stegeman
The engines are running at Heartland Park as racers and fans alike converge this weekend for the SCCA National Runoffs.
Heartland Park has played host to the runoffs for three years, this year is the last before it moves to Wisconsin. It’s one of the biggest weekends for the racetrack and owner Ray Irwin hopes people in the community take advantage of this event in their own backyard. While its a sad moment for Irwin as the last year for the runoffs here, he says he is looking forward to the future of the park. “In a way I guess it is bittersweet,” Irwin said. “But its also the promise of tomorrow that we're bringing with this situation. The festival of speed and all the other events that happen at Heartland Park, we're really beginning to grow. We're at a jumping off point where we are really beginning to hit our stride and that is going to benefit the community and certainly put us even more on the map for entertainment and racing in the United States.” Heartland Park started the Festival of Speed this year with sponsors from across the community. It’s taking place alongside the runoffs as a way to show the community all the park has to offer. |
