Protest Against Power Plants at StatehouseLaine Baker
Protesters at the Statehouse Saturday sent a message to Governor Kathleen Sebelius.
"She needs to take action," said Susan Brown, the Chairperson of Concerned Citizens of Platte County. "She has mentioned that she is concerned about global warming, and she needs to do something about it." What this group wants the Governor to do is prevent proposed coal power plants in Finney County. The State delayed a decision to grant a permit for the plants to be built. They will take public comments on the issue until December 15th. The Governor responded in a written statement: "Governor Sebelius is considering all options as we seek to balance energy development and conservation in our state. At this point, we're still gathering information but I can tell you Governor Sebelius is looking at all possibilities closely." -Nicole Corcoran, Governor's Spokesperson Sunflower Electric Power Corporation released a statement as well: "The project serves the growing energy needs of 1.5 million rural Americans, with reliable power, using advanced generation and environmental technolgy in a way that respects our natural resources and creates economic opportunities for Kansans."--Earl Watkins, president of Sunflower Electric Sunflower Electric Power. Protesters said the plants pollute the air and water causing health problems for local people. "As a result, one in six women have blood mercury levels high enough to harm their fetuses and asthma is a global epidemic," Brown said. "Global warming is out of control because our laws have not caught up to where they need to be so she needs to take action to stop these plants." Some say the plants will bring jobs to Finney County, others say they should find other energy alternatives.
