What To Do With The RiverfrontMeagan Farley
More than one hundred people got together Thursday night to discuss what to do with the Kansas Riverfront in Topeka.
“Skating rinks, ice skating, movies. Things to revive downtown,” said Topeka High School student Rachel Lamunyon. Rachel was front and center at the meeting, proving you're never too young to get involved. “So many people say I’m bored in Topeka, let’s go to Lawrence or Kansas City. Instead, I say let’s get involved in Topeka.” The local chapter of the American Institute of Architects came up with the idea for the brainstorming event. Committee member Melissa Wright-Powers says the turnout shows how invested people are in getting riverfront development moving along. “We feel the energy and synergy. If the public support backs it and funding is there, this could take place,” said Wright-Powers. City Manager Norton Bonaparte says the Riverfront Development Authority is making progress. “Things have been happening. The Riverfront Development Authority has been meeting and did raise more than 50 thousand dollars. They hope to get to 100 thousand to start the planning process. Having the AIA here will kick it off the ground,” said Bonaparte. “This is your community, not your parents or grandparents. It’s yours and for your children. So many of us are destined to spend our lives here so why not make the best of it,” said Lamunyon. |
