Seven hundred, eighty-seven.

That's the number of dealerships that got bad news from Chrysler Motor Co. today.

About 15 of those dealerships are in Kansas.

John Hoffer's Chrysler store in Topeka is safe. But that doesn't mean Hoffer isn't frustrated by Thursday's news.

"We buy all the cars," Hoffer said. "The dealer buys the cars from the factory. We pay for these cars. The sign, even the chrysler sign on the lot, we pay rent on that sign. When I send a mechanic to school, I pay for the school. So I just don't understand how they are laying all the problems on the dealers because we pay our way. And we're their best customer. And they'll tell you that."

In an interview by phone Thursday, owner Junior Brubeck said, "We're not going to take it lying down."

Brubeck says he plans to appeal the decision, and that the dealership will continue to service cars, but he says they may not be able to do warranty work after June 9th.

The only car dealership in Gridley, KS also made the list.

"My dad started it in '49," owner Kim Beyer said. "Just to give that up is like, if a farmer lost his ground, his land, you know. Kind of the way I feel. It's just hard to let go."

Beyer says he plans to appeal and is checking with a lawyer in the next few days.
