President Obama signed the latest measure Friday to extend and expand the tax credit to include buyers who already own homes.

Buyers who have owned their current homes for at least five years would be eligible for tax credits of up to $6500.

First-time homebuyers, or anyone who hasn't owned a home in the last three years, would get credits of up to $8,000.

Jeanine Wells with the Topeka Realtors Association says the expansion of the tax credit is a good thing for the Topeka area.

She says the tax credit has seen a noticiable improvment in the local housing market

Wells says about $63,000 is put back into the economy for every home sold and that this part of the federal stimulus package is affecting the total economy.
