Shawnee County residents should take the following steps to minimize the spread of germs:

Hand Washing

One of the most important ways to prevent the flu is to wash your hands after touching another person, or an item or surface that may have been infected.

    When to Wash Your Hands:
  1. Before preparing or eating food
  2. After going to the bathroom
  3. Before and after tending to someone who is sick
  4. After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
  5. After handling an animal or animal waste
  6. Wet your hands with clean running water and apply soap. Use warm water if it is available.
  7. Rub hands together to make lather and scrub all surfaces.
  8. Continue rubbing hands for 20 seconds. Be sure to scrub between fingers, under fingernails, around joints, and the tops and palms of hands.
  9. Rinse hands well under running water.
  10. Dry your hands using a paper towel or air dryer. If possible, use your paper towel to turn off the faucet.
  11. When helping a child, rub their hands first and then wash your own.
  12. Use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available. Use alcohol-based gel that has at least 60% alcohol content to be effective.
  13. Use hand sanitizer when hands are not visibly dirty (if hands are dirty, wipe off dirt first).
  14. Apply enough sanitizer for both hands to the palm.
  15. Rub hands, covering between fingers, under fingernails, around joints and the tops and palms of hands until dry. If your hands dry before 10 seconds you did not use enough.
  16. After handling garbage
  17. Before and after treating a cut or wound
  18. The Shawnee County Health Agency is dedicated to protecting health in the community by providing prevention, education, and health care services. The Shawnee County Health Agency is dedicated to protecting health in the community by providing prevention, education, and health care services.

How to Wash Hands with Hand Sanitizer:

      Cover Your Cough

To help stop the spread of germs, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Put your used tissue in the trash. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper arm. Wash your hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer.

SCHA will be releasing information in regards to H1N1 vaccinations as soon as it becomes available.
