The term "staycation" gained in popularity last summer when gas prices were so high, but it's not a new trend. 27 News met up with some locals at Lake Shawnee today who are taking a vacation in their hometown.

“Why do anything else? I mean, obviously money is kind of tight right now, we can't go all over the U.S. to do things, I enjoy being here with family, so no real reason to do anything else,” said camper Bryson Bower.

Most of the folks at the lake this weekend are sticking close to home for the 4th celebration.

“It's close...gas prices...(it’s) easy, and it's nice, it's nice here,” said Seneca resident Janet Diehl.

Earlier today we asked the folks who follow 27 news and myself (amy_wolf) on Twitter what they're doing for their 4th of July "staycation."

User "youscareme" says “I'm staying home and doing the norm...BBQ and fireworks!”

And user "mrcmom" tweeted: "Our neighbor sets off a commercial fireworks show that I will put against the one in town any day."
