Jury Duty Scam in KansasKia Carter
We have some important information about a scam that has re-surfaced in Kansas, and it has to do with jury duty.
A scam that's been popping up the last two years is back in Kansas. One where a scammer calls you, saying you were a “no show” for jury duty. "Perspective jurors are being called by what they presume to be officers of the court about why they missed a jury service and that there possibly could be a warrant for their arrest. And to verify that they need to get their Social Security Number and date of birth," says Don Troth, SN. Co. Court Administrator. He says the juror coordinator sends out all jury summons and follow-ups by mail, never by phone. "We do not have telephone numbers our system. It is not set up to have telephone numbers, so if someone wanted us to call a potential juror we'd have to look the name up in the telephone book or something else, because its not a part of our system," says Troth. A phone number on the summons lets you contact the court if you have a conflict and are unable to serve. This scam particularly concerns courts, because people are impersonating government employees. "The court has a certain amount of trust within the community and the court works hard at that. When others try to infringe upon the court’s trust, its concerning for us," says Troth. If you repeatedly miss your jury assignment there is something similar to a warrant put out for you, but the sheriff's office will deliver it in person to your residence, never by phone. An FBI notice on the scam says some are also asked for credit card numbers and threatened with fines if they don't provide personal information. |
