Tests are being done to determine what mystery ingredient caused kidney problems in some animals. Friday Menu Foods Corporation announced a recall of 91 brand names of wet pet food in cans and pouches.

The massive pet food recall this past weekend caused a scare at the Helping Hands Humane Society.

"It is frightening when you think about the number of animals we have at Helping Hands, because on any day we could have up to 300 animals at the shelter, so we were very pleased when only a small portion of our food was affected by the recall," says Carol Stubbs, Helping Hands Humane Society.

The shelter had to get rid of some cases of cat food recalled, but says the animals show no signs of sickness.

"We have seen no affects from the food we've been feeding our animals. They've been thriving and doing very well," says Stubbs.

The recall's meant customers at Petland in Topeka have been asking more questions before buying.

"I had a customer this morning asking if the food we fed was under the recall list," says Tony Birk, Petland employee.

But Petland says the food recall didn't apply to food their animals get.

“It didn't affect us at all. We do carry four varieties of the food that was on the recall list, but none of our codes matched up with the recall codes they have on the internet posted," says Birk.

Symptoms of kidney failure include excessive weight loss, dehydration, vomiting and fatigue. Vets say if your animal has these symptoms and has been eating the recalled food it would be wise to bring them in for test.

Menu Foods says it will compensate any owners whose pets have died or gotten sick, but it might be hard for those pet owners to prove their animal got kidney problems from recalled food without documentation like receipts and Vet records.
