Senate Overrides Governor's Veto On Coal
Senators have overriden Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' veto of a bill allowing two coal-fired power plants in southwest Kansas.
House leaders expected an attempt to override Wednesday afternoon. The Senate vote was 32-7, giving supporters of the coal plants five votes more than the two-thirds majority necessary to nullify a veto. Supporters have always had more than enough votes in the Senate, but they've been at least one short in the House. Legislative leaders scheduled the votes after Sebelius rejected an alternative proposal. Sunflower Electric Power Corp. wants to build the plants in Finney County. But the project has been blocked by Sebelius' administration over the plants' potential carbon dioxide emissions. |
