WASHINGTON (AP) - Sen. Sam Brownback is accusing China of
ordering U.S.-owned hotels to install Internet filters to spy on
international visitors during the summer Olympics.
Brownback made that charge at a news conference today where he
and other lawmakers criticized China's human rights record. The
Kansas Republican also urged President Bush not to attend the
Olympics' opening ceremony.
Brownback says he has seen memos about the Internet filter
request from two U.S.-owned hotels, but he wouldn't name them. He
says he's releasing the information to encourage public pressure to
persuade the Chinese government to drop the demand.
Brownback said he would press his case for Bush not to attend
the Olympic opening ceremonies when the president visits
tornado-damaged Greensburg on Sunday.
