Some Funeral Costs For Fallen Firefighter Still Unpaid By City
The widow of a Topeka Fire Department captain who died fighting a fire last summer says the city has still not paid for all of his funeral costs.
Captain Tony Cox collapsed on August 13th of last year while fighting a fire at the Villa West apartment complex near 27th and Wanamaker. A coroner said the 44 year old veteran firefighter died of heart disease and heat. More than five hundred firefighters turned out for his funeral at the Expocentre just a few days later. Cox's wife went to the city with concerns about the unpaid bill and the city says it is working on getting the unpaid portion taken care of. Meanwhile, Cox's wife will be presented with a medal of valor at a special ceremony tonight. |
