Baxter Springs salad plant closes, 200 jobs lost

BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. (AP) - The Orval Kent Food Co. food processing plant in Baxter Springs will close at the end of January, costing 200 people their jobs. The Joplin Globe reports that a U.S.  bankruptcy court last month approved a bid from Reser's Fine Foods Inc. to buy the assets of Orval Kent's parent company, Chef Solutions.

Orval Kent vice president Kent Kring said Reser's has two large processing plants in Topeka and Moore, Okla. Employees at the Baxter Springs plant make salads. Kring said the plant management and the United Food and Commercial Workers Union are working to place the Baxter Springs workers in new jobs.
