Governor proposes reopening SE Kansas prison camp

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - Kansas would renovate and reopen a corrections camp in the southeastern part of the state to help ease prison crowding under Gov. Sam Brownback's proposed budget. Brownback proposed Thursday that the state spend $1.7 million in revenues generated from state-owned casinos to renovate the former Labette Correctional Conservation Camp in Oswego.

The Department of Corrections closed its minimum-security camp in 2009 because of budget constraints. It would reopen as a medium-security facility next year. It would house 232 geriatric male inmates and 30 minimum-security male inmates. Brownback also is proposing that the state spend $2.2 million in tax dollars on the reopened camp during the fiscal year that begins July 1.
