Local SportsKansas Legislators, Governor Honor Jayhawk Teams
Donning crimson and blue, Jayhawk stickers and national championship T-shirts, state officials paid tribute to the University of Kansas football, basketball and debate teams.
Athletes and debaters were recognized in a special ceremony with Gov. Kathleen Sebelius. They then took center stage on the House and Senate floors. All three teams posted victories in recent months in national competitions. Five seniors from the men's basketball team were on hand. The Jayhawks beat Memphis to win the university's second national title in 20 years. The football team capped a 12-1 season with a victory over Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl. Quarterback Todd Reesing led the delegation. The debate squad won its second national title in three years, beating Harvard, among others. |
