WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Two people were killed and five others injured in a roll-over crash near the intersection of Newell and Young streets in west Wichita Friday afternoon.
“We believe that alcohol was involved and speed was involved,” said Sgt. Troy Nedbalek, Wichita Police Dept.
The crash occurred shortly before 4 p.m.
Wichita Police say a Cadillac Escalade was driving westbound on Young St. at a high rate of speed when it ran the stop sign at Newell and hit a van operated by Starkey, Inc. broadside.
“We had four ambulances, and of course numerous fire crews. Two of the subjects in the van had to be removed by the jaws of life because they were trapped,” Sgt. Nedbalek explained.
There were two Starkey staff members and three disabled residents at the time of the crash. Of those five, two of the disabled passengers died after being taken to Via Christi St. Francis hospital The two staff members are in good and fair condition, and the other two disabled passengers are in critical condition.
The two people in the Escalade were last reported in fair condition.
All the victims went to Via Christi St. Francis hospital.
Two of the victims was pinned inside one of the vehicles, dispatchers said.
Both vehicles rolled several times, police said.
A mourning Starkey community told KSN that they are heartbroken to hear about the two deaths, and hoping that the third resident will pull through.
“We are a large organization, but we are also a family and with the individuals that we serve and the staff that support them, “We just are extremely worried right now, and hoping and praying for the best outcome,” stated Jamie Opat, Director of Communications for Starkey.
