Deputies found the body of Dannie Smith, 70, Wednesday afternoon off of a rural road.
Smith was reported missing to Topeka Police and had not been seen or heard from since, Jan. 4th, police said.
Around 1:30p.m. Wednesday Jackson County deputies received a report of a dead body a half of a mile north of the Shawnee County line on P.4 Road and 1 1/2 mile west of US Hwy 75. The road isn’t traveled often, and is impassable when it rains.
Deputies found Smith’s blue Silverado Chevy pickup truck which was stuck in the mud, and Smith’s body including his chocolate lab nearby.
Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse said that Smith was known to travel to the reservation in Jackson County to purchase cigarettes.
Morse also said his dog, “Bear” was found in good health and was at Smith’s side.
Smith’s body is being taken to Frontier Forensics in Kansas City, Kansas to determine how he died.
