Douglas County has begun the process of collecting contact information for storm cleanup needs and volunteers after Tuesday evening’s tornadoes left damage in many Lawrence homes.

211 of the Great Plains will be coordinating the information collection to pair those who need help cleaning up after the storms with those who want to help.

Both parties are asked to dial 211 and give their information; those in need are asked to identify their needs as well.

Those with damage are advised to not begin cleanup until an insurance adjuster has been notified, except to protect your property from further damage.

The American Red Cross will be sending out damage assessment teams once the damaged areas have been declared safe.

Once the areas have been determined to be safe, volunteers will be contacted and the location of the volunteer reception center will be shared.

Douglas Co. Emergency Management asks that volunteers do not self-deploy to disaster areas, as they need to be credentialed in order to document for emergency declaration relief.
