The City of Topeka is exploring a new way for people to get around town: electric scooters.
At a city council meeting on Tuesday, council members discussed the possibility of allowing electric scooters.
The city said they’ve been approached by several scooter-share companies that have established programs in other cities. People would be able to rent the scooters through an app, similar to the Topeka Metro bikes program the city has now.
At the meeting they discussed concerns about safety and traffic.
To address those concerns, council members talked about limiting the scooters to only people with driver’s licenses and regulating them under the same laws as bicycles. They also brought up the possibility of requiring helmets.
Council members did not vote on the plan Tuesday, but plan to discuss it further in the future.
