Emporia State Men’s basketball falls to late surge from Lopers

January 20, 2019- Emporia State men’s basketball fell 59-53 to Nebraska Kearney on Sunday in White Auditorium. After holding the lead for most of the game, the Hornets were unable to hold off the late surge from the Lopers.

Teams remained scoreless until the 17:30 mark when the Lopers scored on a layup to put the first points on the board. The Hornets answered with a 7-0 run over the next six minutes to take the 7-2 lead with 11:30 left in the half.

After the Lopers tied the game at 7-7 with 9:34 on the clock, the Hornets used a 6-0 run to regain their lead 13-7 with 7:15 in the half. Back-and-forth play for the final seven minutes of the half led to a Hornets 23-17 lead heading into the break.

Coming out for the second half, the Hornets pushed to their largest lead of the game at 30-19 with 17:41 on the clock. The Hornets held on to their lead allowing the Lopers within five points before pushing their lead back to 11 at 44-33 with 9:00 remaining.

After exchanging buckets, the Lopers went on a 16-0 run over 5:09 to take the lead 51-46 with 1:31 remaining. Malik Hluchoweckyj knocked down two free throws with 38 seconds on the clock to bring the Lopers lead down to 51-48, but the Lopers would shoot 8-8 from the line in the final 24 seconds to take the 59-53 win.

The Hornets were outshot 33.9% to 33.3% from the field, 26.9% to 17.4% from three. The Lopers outrebounded the Hornets 47-28 with 14 offensive rebounds that led to 15 second chance points. The Hornets bench outscored the Lopers 25-18 to go along with the Hornets scoring 16 points off turnovers to the Lopers three points.

Malik Hluchoweckyj led the Hornets with 16 points and was joined in double digits by Justin Washington with 11. Washington and Kam Rowan led the Hornets with five rebounds each while Hluchoweckyj, Sawyer Glick and Kooper Glick each added four.

Emporia State will be back in action on Wednesday, January 23 as the Hornets travel to Pittsburg, Kan. to take on Pittsburg State. Tip off of the women’s game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. with the men’s game to follow.
