Government shutdown may impact local tribe’s food program

News

If the government shutdown continues long enough, it could impact a local tribal government. Thirty percent of the Prairie Band Potawatomie’s budget comes from the federal government.

Right now, that’s not causing any issues because of their gaming revenue, but Tribal Chairman Joseph Rupnick said the shutdown could eventually affect their food supplement program.

The program supplies food to more than 100 families in need.

“Typically the majority of those ones there are the ones that need it the most,” Rupnick said.

He said the shutdown may halt deliveries, because of drivers on furlough. They currently have two months worth of food for the program.
