Grandmother dies, 2 children and mother escape house fire in Reno County

The Reno County Sheriff’s office said a 70-year-old grandmother died in a house fire this morning. 

It happened southwest of Cheney Lake at 9 East Horseshoe Lane just after 2:30. 

Deputies arrived and found a single story double wide home on fire. The fire quickly spread. 

The 21-year-old mother and her two children, ages 1 and 2, were able to escape. However, the grandmother, identified as Judy Kay Alley, wasn’t able to escape and died in the fire. 

The mother and her two children were transported to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita. 

Fire units from Pretty Prairie Fire, District 8 and District 9 responded to the scene along with EMS units from Pretty Prairie, Haven and Reno County.

The fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal.
