The man accused in a June 2017 home invasion that lead to the death of a 66-year-old Topeka man, has entered a guilty plea in Shawnee County District Court. Howard Burchfiel, 32, pled guilty Monday to charges of involuntary manslaughter and aggravated burglary.

On June 18, 2017, Topeka Police responded to a 911 call at 117 NE Highway 24, just east of North Kansas Avenue. Officers located Allen Wichman, of Topeka, suffering from life threatening injuries. Wichman died of his injuries in July of 2017. Burchfiel was originally charged with murder in the case, but pled to the lesser charges Monday.

Topeka Police told KSNT News that Burchfiel and Wichman knew each other. Burchfiel is scheduled to be sentenced March 8. Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay sais he will ask for the maximum presumptive sentence based on Burchfiel’s criminal history which includes a 2009 attempted first-degree murder conviction of a Topeka bartender. Prison records indicated Burchfiel was paroled in 2017.
