Helium shortage affects local stores

News

With proms and weddings, it’s one of the busiest times of the year for party stores but a helium shortage could leave sales a little flat.

The global shortage is impacting local stores.

Dollar Tree in Topeka posted signs telling customers they were out of helium.

At Party America, they say supplies are running low and they worry they could also run out.

“Some of the balloons we sell you blow up yourself or you blow them up with oxygen. That has helped, but most of them are helium. So, like I said we have a very good supplier that’s been loyal, but we don’t know how long that will last,” said Co-Owner of Party America Cindy Stubbs.

Stubbs says places like hospitals that require helium for equipment and research take priority over party supply stores.
